<p><strong>Position Overview:</strong></p>
<p>Working with the overall project manager, technical project manager and business operations team, the project manager would be responsible for managing the business process transition from a distributed to a centralised scheduling and timekeeping model.  </p>
<p>The project manager will be responsible for guiding the business operations through this transformation.  This will include helping the business design the new business processes (business process review) and leading the organisation through the change by developing and implementing a sound change management plan.</p>
<p>While the project manager does not have supervisory responsibility, this person will have to work with many others in the organization in order to succeed. The project manager will act as a coach for managers and senior leaders in helping them fulfill the role of change sponsors and project leaders.</p>
<p><em>Roles and Responsibilities:</em><br />
·         Apply a structured project management approach and methodology</p>
<p>·         Develop a change management strategy based on a situational awareness of the details of the change and the groups being impacted by the change.</p>
<p>·         Conduct readiness assessments, evaluate results and present findings in a logical and easy-to-understand manner.</p>
<p>·         Develop a set of actionable and targeted project plan</p>
<p>·         Support the execution of plans by employee-facing managers and business leaders.</p>
<p>·         Be an active and visible coach to team members</p>
<p>·         Create and manage measurement systems to track adoption, utilization and proficiency of individual changes.</p>
<p>·         Identify resistance and performance gaps, and work to develop and implement corrective actions</p>
<p>·         Create and enable reinforcement mechanisms and celebrations of success.</p>
<p>·         Work with project teams to integrate change management activities into the overall project plan.</p>
<p>·         Work with communication, training, and HR in the formulation of particular plans and activities to support project implementation.</p>
<p><em>Skills and Qualifications:</em><br />
·         A solid understanding of how people go through a change and the change process.</p>
<p>·         Experience and knowledge of project and change management principles and methodologies</p>
<p>·         Familiarity with project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle.</p>
<p>·         Exceptional communication skills – both written and verbal.</p>
<p>·         Able to work effectively at all levels in an organization.</p>
<p>·         Excellent active listening skills.</p>
<p>·         Problem solving and root cause identification skills.</p>
<p>·         Strong analytic and decision making abilities.</p>
<p>·         Must be a team player and able to work with and through others.</p>

<p>Imagine this scenario. You&#8217;re hoping to launch a new technology  product and estimate developing the software codes will take five people  to complete. The problem is, there are no in-house software developers  waiting for something to do and expanding the staff for one project is  out of the question. Hiring a technology consultant could be the most  efficient way of completing the project.</p>
<p>Before you hire a consultant, Gary Cadman thinks there are a few  things to keep in mind. Cadman is a technology consultant recruitment  expert, and principal of Vancouver-based Cadman Consulting Group. He  offered the following advice:</p>
<p>Define your needs. No technology consultant can do a proper job if  you haven&#8217;t figured out exactly what you need done. Having detailed  notes on what you want to accomplish will help you identify which skills  to look for in a consultant.</p>
<p>Up-front due diligence is key. Spend the necessary time going through  the applications and look for inconsistencies-Cadman said one in five  resumes isn&#8217;t entirely accurate. Conduct thorough interviews and check  at least three references. A Consultant&#8217;s former managers will likely  make better references than former co-workers.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t hire sight unseen. Technology consultants won&#8217;t become part of  your permanent staff, but chances are they&#8217;ll still have to work with  several of your employees. So meet them in person. Doing so is  particularly important when using the internet to locate consultants.</p>
<p>Look for consultants whose past professional environment matches your  company&#8217;s. A technology consultant used to working in a R&amp;D  environment may not be well-suited for a manufacturing business.</p>
<p>Nothing can substitute for years on the job. As a rule of thumb,  Cadman seeks technology specialists with minimum of three years of  technical expertise and 10 years working in a technology environment.</p>
<p>Put it on paper. Define goals and schedule specifications of a job as  far as you can take them. Insist on receiving frequent status reports  which will keep you and the consultant on track.</p>
<p>Get your staff involved. Make sure whoever will be using the  application or system being developed by a consultant is involved in the  entire process, from planning right through to testing and  implementation. Clearly identifying the needs of end users will reduce  the risk of a consultant going off-track or of a project running too  long.</p>
<p>Before hiring consultants to manage your projects related to the Year  2000 problem, complete a systems audit. Make a list of all applications  used in your office. The more information your consultants have, the  better they&#8217;ll manager the project.</p>
<p>Always keep lines of communication open. It will keep you informed  about progress and it will give consultants the confidence to talk to  you about issues before they become problems.</p>
<p>Trust your instincts. Don&#8217;t be afraid to turn away candidates who  look good on paper, but who you feel will not be a good match with your  company.</p>

<p>IT&#8217;S OUR GREAT HONOUR to be back with our sixth Forty Under Forty,  B.C.&#8217;s original showcase of astounding young business people who make  the rest of us feel lacklustre by comparison.</p>
<p>That of course is some people&#8217;s initial reaction. But once they read  these stories, it&#8217;s hard not to get caught up by amazement at what some  people in their 20s and 30s have managed to do. Once again this year, as  in previous years, the range is phenomenal&#8211; from clothing retailers to  ultrasound software designers to computer recyclers.</p>
<p>What is especially satisfying in publishing stories about these  people is that most of them have never been featured in the media  before. No other forum allows Greater Vancouver readers to discover this  wealth of upcoming local talent before these people become more widely  recognized.</p>
<p>Forty Under Forty winners are picked from names submitted by BIV  readers, which are then verified and documented by our editorial  research team, led by the exemplary efforts of Noel MacDonald. A panel  of judges then decides which ones achieved the most &#8220;outstanding  performance in a business environment, private or public.&#8221; Winners have  to live in B.C. and be under 40 on December 31, 1996.</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s judges were Suromitra Sanatini, director of provincial  affairs, B.C. and the Yukon, for the Canadian Federation of Independent  Business, Stanley Shapiro, dean of the Faculty of Business  Administration, Simon Fraser University, James Hudson, senior VP of the  Pacific Division of the TD Bank, and myself. We tried scoring everyone  on a points system, but soon gave that up for a more subjective  assessment. When you read the stories, you&#8217;ll know instinctively, as we  did, that these people are winners.</p>
<p>Now that BIV readers have had a chance to meet these &#8220;tycoons of  tomorrow,&#8221; we&#8217;ll be giving them a chance to meet each other. On January  30, the TD Bank, Corporate Recruiters and Straiths will be sponsoring a  gala reception to honour this year&#8217;s top Forty Under Forty.</p>
<p>Gary Cadman has technology for hire.</p>
<p>His recruiting company, the Cadman Consulting Group Inc., has a  roster of 600 computer specialists trained to do anything from  programming new software to working on mainframe computer systems.  Operating as a high tech. temporary agency, Cadman will match up  prospective workers with the job his clients need done.</p>
<p>Cadman&#8217;s service works well for his customers on two fronts-it helps  them find people for temporary work and it prevents them from having to  go through a time-consuming screening process.</p>
<p>&#8220;They need someone yesterday,&#8221; Cadman says. &#8220;Companies can be  inundated with resumes, and in a lot of cases they don&#8217;t know where to  start.&#8221;</p>
<p>Effective screening is integral to Cadman&#8217;s credibility, so  prospective candidates must go through an interview and have their  credentials verified. As well, reference checks with two or three  previous managers are always conducted.</p>
<p>BC Rail has been a customer of Cadman&#8217;s for about a year. Ed  Smethurst, Application Development Supervisor for the information  services department, says Cadman&#8217;s company saves BC Rail time by  prequalifying its contract candidates.</p>
<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s very professional, he&#8217;s always very enthusiastic and working to  help us,&#8221; Smethurst says. &#8220;We&#8217;ve taken on the people he&#8217;s put forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>Cadman&#8217;s company is just three years old, but his revenues are  expected to be more than $1 million this year. Currently, he has 22 or  23 workers out in the field. He takes a portion of their salaries.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve doubled in one year, and we expect that growth to continue,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Cadman has working in the computer industry for 18 years, holding  jobs at such places as the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Imperial  Bank of Commerce and Tandem Computers. He has no formal post-secondary  degree but has taken many courses to supplement his education.</p>
<p>Cadman, who is unmarried and doesn&#8217;t spend all his days indoors with a  computer: he enjoys mountain biking and skiing, and even participated  in a sailboat race from Victoria to Maui this June.</p>
<p>And he admits that while he can grasp the goals his clients are  trying to accomplish, he doesn&#8217;t perform any of the technical services  himself.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a sales guy,&#8221; Cadman says. &#8220;If I tried to go and develop something right now, it would be dangerous.&#8221;</p>
